Bunshokan is about 10 minutes by bus from Yamagata Station.
Bunshokan is a prefectural office and a prefectural parliament building built in 1916 in 1916 with a brick structure based on the British Renaissance style. Currently, the functions of the prefectural office and the prefectural assembly have been moved to another government building, so they are not used as an administrative role. After the relocation, these government buildings have high historical values and will be preserved as a historical museum in Yamagata Prefecture. It was designated as a national important cultural property in 1984, and after restoration work, it opened as Bunshokan in 1995. Bunshokan not only serves as a archive for materials, but also rents out several facilities such as the proceedings hall, and holds concerts, live performances, and other events. In recent years, it has also been used as a location for movies.
The highlight is the front view of the old prefectural office. The dignified European-style building is also a shooting spot, and you can often see tourists taking commemorative photos. The old prefectural office can also be entered, with luxurious stairs with red carpet and a palace-like conference room on display. Also, the corridor connecting the old prefectural office and the old prefectural parliament building is a feature of Bunshokan, so I want to make sure not to miss it. In front of the building, a well-maintained green plaza spreads out and is a relaxing space.
