Beyazit Tower is a 50m high tower on the premises of Istanbul University. The Beyazit Tower was built in 1828 by the order of Mahmud II of the Ottoman Empire as a watchtower for fires in the city. For surveillance purposes, the tower has a surveillance platform that can be climbed to the top to overlook the city. However, the observatory is no longer open to the public, so you can't even climb the Beyazit Tower. Originally built of wood, the Beyazit Tower was converted into a stone tower in 1926 and is familiar to the surrounding buildings. It is also lit up at night, and the weather is known by the color of the light. Blue is sunny and red is rain. Since there are few tall buildings around, you can see it from a distance, and it may be used as a landmark. |
