| The Palais Garnier is one of Paris's most iconic opera houses. Also known as the Opéra Garnier, it is distinguished by its lavish ornamentation—a feature immediately apparent from its exterior. The resident national opera company boasts a long history dating back to 1669; while the company performed in various venues over the centuries, it eventually settled into the Palais Garnier—designed by Charles Garnier—upon its completion in 1875. Situated in the heart of Paris at the center of a traffic circle, the building is visible from many directions, creating picturesque scenes that harmonize beautifully with the surrounding cityscape. The absolute best vantage point is near the entrance/exit of the Opéra metro station. While the view from the entrance itself is lovely, crossing the street to view the building from the center of the traffic circle offers a better perspective, revealing the distinctive green dome; this is the recommended spot for taking photos. While attending a performance is a wonderful option if time permits, the Palais Garnier is a sightseeing destination that impresses deeply even if you simply admire its magnificent exterior. |
