Sightseeing Guide
The Basilica Cistern is located just a short walk from the Blue Mosque.
The Basilica Cistern is a large underground cistern built during the Byzantine Empire. Despite being a cistern, its palace-like structure, including decorated columns, has earned it the name "Underground Palace." While the entrance is unremarkable, once you enter the underground, the atmosphere becomes somewhat eerie. Those who are easily frightened by haunted houses or horror movies should visit during the daytime when there are more tourists.
The highlight of the Basilica Cistern is the Medusa Column at the back of the cistern. The inverted face of Medusa is said to be there to prevent Medusa from using her magical powers.
