Kajo Park is located in the center of Yamagata City and close to Yamagata Station. Kajo Park is a large park of about 36ha that was built on the site of Yamagata Castle and was opened to the public in 1949. Many remnants of the site of Yamagata Castle remain in the park, and in recent years some of the facilities of Yamagata Castle have been restored. One of the highlights is the Ninomaru Higashi Otemon, which is one of the two restored castle gates. The huge gate is reminiscent of the dignity of Yamagata Castle at that time, and is also a shooting spot. Another castle gate is "Honmaru Ichimonmon". As it is a gate to the main enclosure, the Honmaru Ichimonmon Gate at the end of the bridge over the moat is a picturesque beauty. In addition to several museums such as the Yamagata Folk Museum and the Yamagata Museum of Art, there are also facilities for citizens to enjoy, such as a baseball field and tennis courts. Among these facilities, you should definitely see the statue of Mogami Yoshiaki, the 11th generation castle owner who is said to have built the castle of Yamagata Castle. You can take a superb view of the statue in the horse fight with the East Otemon in the background. Kajo Park is also known as a famous place for cherry blossoms, and during the cherry blossom season, about 1500 cherry blossoms in the park are lit up and you can enjoy the cherry blossoms at night. In addition, events such as tea parties are held at the time of full bloom, so this is also one of the highlights. |
